“For many years, I have been looking for the missing picture: a photograph taken between 1975 and 1979 by the Khmer Rouge when they ruled over Cambodia... On its own, of course, an image cannot prove mass murder, but it gives us cause for thought, prompts us to meditate, to record History. I searched for it vainly in the archives, in old papers, in the country villages of Cambodia. Today I know: this image must be missing. I was not really looking for it; would it not be obscene and insignificant? So I created it. What I give you today is neither the picture nor the search for a unique image, but the picture of a quest: the quest that cinema allows.”

Rithy Panh
Rithy Panh (Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 1964), starting in 1975, was forced to work in labor camps by the Khmer Rouge. In 1979, he escaped to the refugee camp in Mairut, Thailand. The next year he moved to Paris, where he graduated from the IDHEC. As a director, he is best known for his documentaries about his land of origin, which include La terre des âmes errantes (1999), awarded at Cinéma du réel in Paris, and S 21, la machine de mort Khmère Rouge (2003), presented at Cannes and at the 21st Torino Film Festival. He has also directed fiction films, such as Rice People (1994) and Un soir après la guerre, selected in 1998 for Un certain regard at Cannes, and Un barrage contre le Pacifique, starring Isabelle Huppert and presented at the festivals in Toronto and Rome.
