LA BATAILLE DE SOLFERINO

AGE OF PANIC
by Justine Triet
Country: France
Year: 2013
Duration: 94'

May 6, 2012 marks the run-off between the two candidates for President of France, the socialist Hollande and the incumbent Sarkozy. Foreseeing Hollande’s victory, the journalists throng Rue Solférino, where the headquarters of the Socialist Party are located. One of the journalists in the crowd is Laetitia, who, in order to cover the event live, has entrusted her two daughters to a babysitter and warned him not to give them to the girls’ father in case he shows up. Obviously, nothing goes as planned, and the crowd that invades the streets of Paris is also the setting of a showdown between Laetitia and her former companion, and it is no less rowdy than the political confrontation that has just ended.

Biography

film director

Justine Triet

Justine Triet (France, 1978) graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris and made her first short documentary, Sur place, in 2007; it was followed the next year by Solférino. In 2009, she directed Des ombres dans la maison, set in a neighborhood of São Paulo, and the next year she directed her first fiction short, Vilaine fille mauvais garçon, which won numerous awards at festivals in France and abroad (including the Prix UIP Berlin at the Berlinale, and the Grand Prix of the festivals of Angers and Belfort) and was selected for the César Award for best short film. La bataille de Solférino is her first feature film.

Declaration

film director

“Often, people who want to make realistic movies believe in the ideal of purity. But what interests me, on the contrary, is impurity, both in the form and the content. My characters are ‘filthy misfits,’ children who have grown up panic stricken and who have lost the ability to live. I prefer things in their crudeness rather than ghosts or modern stories. Laetitia and Vincent are at times difficult, monstrous or violent, but they are alive!”
