LA DANZA DE LA REALIDAD

THE DANCE OF REALITY
by Alejandro Jodorowsky
Country: Chile
Year: 2013
Duration: 130'

The only way young Alejandro can escape the difficult reality around him is through his imagination. Born into a family of Russian Jewish immigrants in Tocopilla, in the middle of Chile’s desert, he is crushed between his parents’ strict education and the hostility of the other children, who consider him an outsider and too different from them. His only allies in this daily struggle are literature, movies and philosophy.

Biography

film director

Alejandro Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky (Chile, 1929) moved to Paris in the 1950s, where he founded the Teatro Panico with Fernando Arrabal and Roland Topor. At the same time, his interest in cinema grew: in fact, his first short, La cravate, dates back to 1957. He gained world renown with his subsequent feature-length films Fando and Lis (1968), El Topo (1971) and The Holy Mountain (1973), which reflect his visionary and baroque style, mixing surrealism, a mystical thrust and pyschedelia. A novelist, poet and comic book author, and still one of the most famous artists of the Surrealist movement, he occasionally returns to cinema, as he did with Santa sangre (1989) and The Rainbow Thief (1990).

Declaration

film director

“To me, this film is like a mental atomic bomb. I have written books and invented a therapy called ‘psychomagic’ that involves acts to heal family-related childhood psychological problems. La danza de la realidad is not just a film, but also a kind of family healing because three of my sons act in it. I am going back to the source of my childhood, to the same place where I grew up, in order to reinvent myself. It’s a reconstruction that has reality as its starting point but which does not allow me to change the past.”
