LA PLAGA

THE PLAGUE
by Neus Ballús
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Duration: 82'

Raul, an organic produce farmer, hires Iurie, a Moldavian wrestler who is desperate to find a job. The lives of the two men soon intersect those of Maria, an elderly woman who is forced to leave her home in the country for a hospice; Rose, a Filipino nurse who has just arrived in Spain; and Maribel, a prostitute who is steadily losing clients. Their lives are dominated by solitude; the economic crisis weighs on them all, destroying any certainties. The setting is the outskirts of Barcelona: industrial complexes, low-rent housing and highways offering the last glimpses of the countryside.

Declaration

film director

“Because of this feeling of loneliness and uncertainty, I’ve always thought of The Plague as a contemporary western. Also because we’re talking about the life on the margins of the system, in a strange landscape, in the heat of the summer… And that’s something that I had always in mind in creating the aesthetic atmosphere of the film.”
