MAHJONG

MAHJONG
by João Pedro Rodrigues, João Rui Guerra da Mata
Country: Portugal

Varziela is the largest Chinese community in Portugal. A woman wearing high heels, a blond wig, and an oriental silk dress wanders in the night through the streets of this Chinatown. A mysterious man in black is following her between the stores and warehouses of counterfeit goods. Meanwhile, two rival gangs from the Japanese mafia are confronting each other. The final result will be utterly unpredictable, just like in a game of mahjong.

Declaration

film director

“Mahjong perpetuates the Asian theme of the films we started to make together in 2007, with the short film China, China, shot in Martim Moniz, the most multicultural area of Lisbon, then the short Alvorada Vermelha (2011), and finally the feature A Última Vez Que Vi Macau (2012), these last two shot mainly in Macao. If A Última Vez Que Vi Macau was a documentary about an imaginary place, Mahjong is the imagination of a real place.”
