Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit
Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit (1984) is an author, screenwriter, and director from Thailand. While he was still a university student, he started working as a self-taught film director, making several short films. His debut feature 36 (2012) won several awards in some of the most prestigious festivals in Asia, and also participated to the Rotterdam Film Festival. Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy was made thanks to the support of the Biennale College of the Venice Film Festival.

“This film is an experiment to find a new way to tell a story. Being a professional script writer, I’m used to being in control. But adapting the Twitter stream of someone I’ve never met into a film, the challenge was to take a series of random, often meaningless daily events and form them into a coherent narrative. I chose a section of 410 consecutive Tweets. I used all of them as they were written, without skipping any nor changing their order. […] I think the result comments on the unpredictable nature of daily life in the contemporary world.”
