ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE
by Jim Jarmusch
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Duration: 123'

Adam is an underground musician in Detroit who hides from the world and leads a predominantly nocturnal lifestyle. His wife Eve lives in Tangiers and their love story has been going on for centuries. In fact, they are two elegant and bohemian vampires who have turned to isolation and darkness in their search for salvation from a world gone mad, which they consider vulgar and in its death throes. When Adam and Eve are finally rejoined, their existence is endangered by Eve’s uncontrollable younger sister who, like a disease, slips into their relationship, which over the years had survived the hardest ordeals.

Biography

film director

Jim Jarmusch

Jim Jarmusch (Akron, OH, USA, 1953) studied in Paris and New York, where he still lives and where he began his career in the downtown scene during the early 1980s. Right from the start, he became known as one of the highest exponents of American independent cinema, and in 1980 he directed Permanent Vacation, imposing his minimalist and ironic style. Following films include Stranger Than Paradise (1984) and Down by Law (1986), featuring Benigni and Tom Waits, and his later masterpieces  Dead Man (1995), Ghost Dog (1999) and Broken Flowers (2005), all of which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.

Declaration

film director

“This is a love story, but also the story of two exceptional outsiders who, given their unusual circumstances, have a vast overview of human and natural history, including stunning achievements and tragic and brutal failures. Adam and Eve are themselves metaphors for the present state of human life – they are fragile and endangered, susceptible to natural forces, and to the shortsighted behavior of those in power.”
