On the outskirts of Caracas, nine-year-old Junior lives with his young mother Marta, an unemployed widow, in a huge apartment complex, a mixture of desperation and cement. Theirs is anything but a loving relationship: Marta is disturbed by her son’s obsession with his looks; Junior only wants to straighten his hair, which is frizzy and messy, so he can look good in the class photo. Junior’s affectations are intolerable to Marta, who is involved in a daily struggle for survival, and she even accuses her son of sexual ambiguity. In a crescendo of domination and misunderstandings, Junior finds himself painfully dealing with his mother’s frustrations, whose own vulnerability has made her blind to his problems.

Declaration
film director
“I’m interested in talking about helpless characters, who lack resources for emotional survival. I started by questioning a mother’s love. Is it a matter of instinct or is it an unconditional duty? Emotion is not duty.”
