REI INÚTIL

REX INUTILIS
by Telmo Churro
Country: Portugal
Year: 2013
Duration: 25'

April approaches, and for the third year in a row, Tiago is thinking about his still-uncertain graduation trip, which he wants to take with his girlfriend of the moment. The problem is that he isn’t sure he’ll pass his exams this year either and, to be quite honest, the outlook is not good. His only chance for getting his diploma lies in his history exam, but the questions are about Don Sancho II and Tiago isn’t convinced that he wrote the correct answers about the life of the legendary king.

Declaration

film director

“When I got the first urge to make Rei Inútil I thought of a young man, a resistant in a city that is my own, increasingly deserted of inhabitants. In this city, which some many consider cheerful – especially tourists – this melancholic boy would be confronted with what was left: parks and their animals, statues of dead poets, churches empty of their faithful. And him, with his small problems, facing the monumental city. Hence, a scale relation. The living body opposing the statue, or the mundane life discussed with the highest spiritual power. Then, the film rocked me through other paths, and there I went.”
