ROSARNO

ROSARNO
by Greta De Lazzaris
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Duration: 70'

The town of Rosarno, its orange groves, where many hands are busy harvesting, sorting, loading. And then the pastures where sheep are grazing: a child shepherd who already seems grown up. Women, those of Rosarno and those who come from far away: the lives of many people waiting to be elsewhere.

Declaration

film director

“Migrant is a generic name for speaking about distinct individuals, who are standing on the side of the road waiting for a hypothetical future. ‘They make do with killing time as they wait for time to kill them,’ wrote Simone De Beauvoir. You can’t take a picture of the time spent waiting. No human eye will ever be able to discover the truth, the torment of each individual. This is the question I found myself faced with when I went to Rosarno in 2004, many years before the revolt, when the human drama taking place was still being ignored by everybody. It took nine years of my life to begin editing the shot footage, to understand which were the right images and the right distances, in order to give reality and complexity back to this town and to the life of its inhabitants, migrants and locals alike.”
