Twenty-three girls arrive in Santa Barbara from every corner of California to participate in the “Young American Miss” beauty pageant. For four days, they are questioned regarding their talents, their aspirations, their life; they are trained by a choreographer, and “weighed” and spied on by the judges and voyeurs. But the girls know that the only important aspect is their appearance. A satire of show time society, constructed and shot like Nashville (and released shortly after Altman’s masterpiece), a cross-section of provincial euphoria, orchestrated by Michael Ritchie and the movie’s star, Bruce Dern.
