SUI BORDI - DOVE FINISCE IL MARE

ON THE EDGES - WHERE THE SEA ENDS
by Francesca Cogni
Country: Italy, France
Year: 2013
Duration: 39'

A long voyage by sea full of expectations shattered upon arriving to dry land. The Fortress Europe closes its doors, revealing the hardness and the absurdity of its laws and its institutions. The perpetual wait, the violence against physical and psychological borders. This Super 8 film uses video footage and animation to portray once more the migrations of the Mediterranean Sea, trying to restore body and images to what we distractedly read in newspapers.

Declaration

film director

“This movie stems from a strong political motivation that tries to seize a visual translation capable of posing questions, asking viewers to find their own way through the images. Finding a form wasn’t easy: the urgency of the issue at hand would clash with my intention of not speaking in other people’s place, trying to tell the story in a way that was explicitly personal; a reflection that wouldn’t impose, detract, or use other people’s stories to perpetuate a vision (in the media) dependent on the concept of otherness. It was a matter of understanding where I stood within this urgency.”
