Two rowdy Navy noncommissioned officers have one week to escort to prison a young sailor who tried to steal forty dollars and has been sentenced to eight years. They take a liking to the slightly obtuse young man and decide to teach him how to live, drink, fight and womanize. Nicholson and Otis Young take care of Randy Quaid in a wicked and cheerful buddy movie, written by the great screenwriter Robert Towne.

Hal Ashby

Hal Ashby was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1929. He left school at the age of 17, moved to Los Angeles and was employed by Universal in the cyclostyle department. In the second half of the 50s, he worked in the editing department, becoming the chief editor in 1965. In 1970 he made his debut as a director with The Landlord.

Hal Ashby was assistant editor for: 1958 The Big Country by William Wyler; 1959: The Diary of Anne Frank by George Stevens; 1961: The Young Doctors by Phil Carlson; The Children Hours by William Wyler; 1963: Captain Sinbad by Byron Haskin; 1964: The Best Man by Franklin Schaffner; 1965: The Greatest Story Ever Told by George Steven.

He was editor-in-chief for: 1965: The Loved One by Tony Richardson; The Cincinnati Kid by Norman Jewison; 1966: The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming by Norman Jewison; 1967:  In the Heat of the Night by Norman Jewison; 1968: The Thomas Crown Affair by Norman Jewison.

Ashby also worked as associate producer for The Thomas Crown Affair and Gaily Gaily (1969), both directed by Jewison.

He directed the following films: 1970: The Landlord; 1971: Harold and Maude; 1973: The Last Detail; 1975: Shampoo; 1976: Bound for Glory; 1978: Coming Home; Second-Hand Hearts; 1979: Being There; 1980: The Hawkline Monster; 1981: Lookin’ to Get Out; 1982: Rolling Stones.
