Fourteen-year-old Duncan is on a holyday in Cape Cod with his mother, her new boyfriend, and the boyfriend’s daughter. Duncan is lonely and shy, until he finds some comfort in Owen’s friendship. The eccentric manager of a water park takes the boy under his wing and hires him as his assistant. Away from his family and surrounded by his new friends, Duncan finally manages to face life with courage.

Nat Faxon
Nat Faxon (1975) and Jim Rash (1970) acted in several popular American TV series, appearing in My Name Is Earl, Mad Men, Life According to Jim, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Friends, Will & Grace, That ’70s Show, and Community. They also appeared in many movies, like Minority Report (2000), S1m0ne (2002), and Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story (2007), among others. The creative duo wrote their first screenplay in 2005, the TV movie Adopted. They received an Oscar for best writing with Alexander Payne for The Descendants (2011), and nominations for the Golden Globes and at the BAFTA Awards. The movie was also presented in the 29th Torino Film Festival. The Way Way Back marks their debut as film directors.

“We had a fondness for water parks, and growing up on the East Coast and destination vacations and all the things that come with that... But then we had this personale story, [...] in which my stepfather and I had a conversation in the station wagon on our way to our summer vacations in Michigan. We’d go every year. In our second year maybe going he had this conversation where he asked me what I thought I was on a scale of one to ten, and I said ‘six,’ thinking ‘above average,’ and he said ‘three,’ and then went on to say [...] this great lesson: ‘I’m telling you to go out, and meet people and take advantage of your summer, not stick around your mom and me all the time.’” (J.
