Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern lead a gang of California bikers: joyrides, brawls, police chases, an orgy in a church. Ten years after The Wild One with Brando, and three years before Easy Rider, Corman captures the signs of rebellion, with anarchic nihilism and the “acid” culture. Walk-ons include the real Hell’s Angels of Venice Beach; among the girls, Nancy Sinatra (Frank’s daughter) and Diana Ladd (Laura Dern’s mother). The motorcycle funeral is memorable.
