Fifteen-year-old Chérif’s parents are divorced and his relationship with his mother is terrible. He is sent to live with his uncle and aunt in the same city where his father lives, with whom he has had no contact since the divorce. The hope is that the boy will improve in this new environment. In fact, life at his aunt and uncle’s is fairly tranquil and Chérif’s cousin is the typical straight arrow. Or at least this is how it seems, until the young boy one evening shows Chérif his real lifestyle and reveals a new world to him.

Hélier Cisterne
Hélier Cisterne (Paris, France, 1981), after studies in philosophy, debuted as a director in 2003 with the short Dehors. His second film, Les deux vies du serpent, was presented at the Semaine de la critique in Cannes and won the Grand Prix at the Brest Short Film Festival and a Bronze Bear at the Festival of Nations in Austria. His next film, Les paradis perdus, received the special mention of the Press Prize at the Festival of Clermont-Ferrand and was selected for the category best short Film at the 2009 César Awards. Vandal is his first feature film.

“I wanted to sketch the portrait of an adolescent, and through him embody the strange and unusual experience of this age torn between family, friends and love – three worlds known for being areas of every confrontation. School too, which is made stressful by the anxiety of having to choose a career path and determine one’s future. Far from being carefree, this period is, however, still filled with fantasy and aspirations that enhance daily life. This romantic and lyrical side specific to adolescence was important to me.”
