Vietnam, 1964. Major Barker sends a unit composed of American and South Vietnamese soldiers to occupy an old military base. During the initial attack, the Vietcong tactics find everyone unprepared. Shot on a low budge in California (the protagonist, Burt Lancaster, invested 150,000 dollars to complete it), it is one of the first, lucid films that deal with the “dirty war,” compromised right from the start. The English title is magnificent, calling to mind the three hundred Spartans at Thermopile.
