IN JOUW NAAM

IN YOUR NAME
by Marco van Geffen
Country: Netherlands, Belgium, France
Year: 2014
Duration: 90'

Ton and Els are a young couple that sees its dreams come true when their baby girl is born. Unfortunately they don’t even have the time to give her a name: she dies suddenly from a rare disease. Ton takes it particularly hard and, despite Els’s emotional support, he cannot get over his grief. Instead, he starts perceiving her strength as a sign of betrayal. When Els accidentally gets pregnant again, she sees it as the start of a new life. She is so intent on moving on that she even denies the brief existence of their firstborn. Ton, instead, feels increasingly alone and abandoned.

Biography

film director

Marco van Geffen

Marco van Geffen (1959) went to art school in Arnhem (The Netherlands) and started working as a writer for cinema and television. He made his debut as a director in 2006 with three short films, Dylan, Holi and My Sister, which was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. He then worked on the TV series Moodboard Schnitzel and Schnitzel - The Series from 2007 to 2008. In 2009 he started working on the so-called Vinex Trilogy: starting with his debut feature film Among Us (presented at the Locarno and the Toronto Film Festival), and continuing with In Your Name (2013).

Declaration

film director

“In Your Name intends to get under the skin of someone who commits an abominal, erratic act, and follow his reasoning. Can I get so far as to understand how a man, more or less like myself, could kill his wife? Really understanding him, instead of simply saying he is guilty? Ton is guilty, of course, but I want to take the audience by the hand, and show that Ton himself too is a victim. In this way we might find ways to prevent such acts, rather than merely condemn him and walk away.”
