MELVIN AND HOWARD

MELVIN AND HOWARD
by Jonathan Demme
Country: USA
Year: 1980
Duration: 95'

An old man with flowing hair has a motorcycle accident in the Nevada desert. Picked up by Melvin, he refuses to go the hospital and instead wants to be taken to the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, where he gets out saying he is the billionaire Howard Hughes. Melvin’s life goes on, between dreams and disappointments. After cutting his teeth with Corman, Demme shot his sixth movie, a small ode to the American proletarian. A bitter and tender comedy, dominated by crazy Jason Robards and absent-minded Mary Steenburger, who won an Oscar (the other one was for best screenplay).

Biography

film director

Jonathan Demme

Jonathan Demme (Rockville Center, Long Island, New York; 1944) worked for United Artists in the publicity department. He was hired by Roger Corman's New World. His first films as a director are strongly in debt to the "Corman spirit". At the end of the 1980's he founded the association Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, against the repressive regime of Johannesburg. In 1991 he won the Oscar for best director for The Silence of the Lambs. At present, he is working on the film, Beloved, based on the novel by Nobel prize winner Toni Morrison.
