Jacob Kaplan lives in Uruguay, a refugee who escaped from WWII. He is now seventy-six years old and is increasingly bothered and disappointed by the scarce interest his relatives show in their Jewish origins. When he meets an elderly German man, a suspicion immediately takes root: could this man be an incognito Nazi? To reveal the man’s identity would let his family regain their community’s respect. He begins an improbable investigation with the help of the former policeman Contreras, a man with a big heart but rather murky methods.

Alvaro Brechner
Alvaro Brechner (Uruguay) studied documentary filmmaking at the Universidad autónoma de Barcelona and then moved to Madrid in 2002, where he directed numerous documentaries for TV channels such as the History Channel, Odissey and TVE. He debuted in film in 2003 with the short The Nine Mile Walk, which was followed by Sofía (2005) and Segundo aniversario (2007), which won awards at festivals throughout the world. This success was repeated by his first feature film, Mal día para pescar (2009), presented at the Semaine de la critique in Cannes.

“One of the main challenges of Mr Kaplan was its tone. I see life as a mix of comedy and drama, two sides of the same coin. Even in the saddest background and circumstances, the use of humour gives us the strength to persevere and get enlightened. Maybe that’s why I’ve always felt attracted toward characters that possess a quixotic mentality, whose longing for epic adventure strongly opposes the absurd circumstances of reality.”
