THE EDITOR

THE EDITOR
by Matthew Kennedy, Adam Brooks
Country: Canada
Year: 2014
Duration: 102'

Formerly a highly sought-after film editor, Rey Ciso is going through a rough period. After a bloody accident left him with four wooden fingers, he is forced to edit bad B movies to make ends meet. When the corpses of the stars of the movie he is editing are found in his studio, he becomes the prime suspect. But the truth is a different one and much more unsettling: it is up to him to reveal it.

Biography

film director

Matthew Kennedy

Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy met in 2006 at the Winnipeg Short Film Massacre. Right from the start it was clear to both of them that they wanted to create an artistic collaboration to make horror movies and thrillers. Their first step was to found the no-budget collective Astron-6 to distribute their movies and those of other director friends and “affiliates.” Together, they have made – directing, writing and carrying out a vast range of roles during the production phase – the shorts Cool Guys: The Movie (2009), Breaking Santa (2012) and the feature-length Father’s Day (2011, codirected with Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostansky and Conor Sweeney). They also appeared in the pluri-prize-winning medium-length movie Manborg (2011) by Steven Kostanski.

Declaration

film director

“The Editor is our love letter to the Italian giallo films of the 1970s and 1980s […]. Most of these old films were written in Italian but performed in English, set in America but shot in Italy, all to appeal to a larger world market. This resulted in some often-unusual syntax and almost always-unusual cadences and deliveries on the part of the English speaking performers. It is perhaps as important to the giallo aesthetic as dream logic, hyper-violence or an overactive zoom lens. And it is this aesthetic that charmed us so much to begin with. With giallo films, the style is the substance.”
