Earl Macklin, a small-time “free agent,” gets out of prison and discovers that his brother has been murdered by the Outfit, a Chicago criminal organization, and that his girlfriend Bett has been tortured. Earl decides to get revenge by stealing from the Outfit. Based on a novel by Westlake, a mean and disenchanted noir directed by John Flynn, a former assistant of Robert Wise. Along with Robert Duvall and Karen Black, a sophisticated cast of actors who fit in with the genre.
