A SIMPLE GOODBYE

A SIMPLE GOODBYE
by Degena Yun
Country: China
Year: 2015
Duration: 100'

The story of two generations unfolds through apparently disconnected moments. The story of Shanshan, who was sent to England to study when she was young and finds herself living a solitary life, involved in virtual relationships which pain her but which she can’t do without; and that of a middle-aged father, who left his hometown as a young man, moved to Beijing and is now facing death. His feelings of helplessness involve the condition of the state-run film studio where he works, while his illness increasingly undermines him.

Declaration

film director

“The living are always running away from the reality of death, even when it’s right in front of us. I avoided revisiting memories of my father’s death, but when I became a mother myself, I finally began to understand the innate human duty to multiply. I was forced to experience the unique feelings parents have toward their children. The isolation brought on by those feelings was intense, so intense that typical means of emotional expression no longer sufficed. In many families today, love is something buried too deep in people’s hearts, and it’s too hard to see from outside.”
