In the 1950s, young Ellis emigrates from Ireland to the United States, leaving behind her mother and sister. After arriving in Brooklyn, she finds a room in a women’s boarding house and work in a department store. Despite her initial difficulties, and her homesickness for her family, Ellis falls in love with Tony, an Italian-American plumber, who in turn loves her. But when she receives the unexpected and devastating news that her sister has died, Ellis returns to Ireland, meets a possible new beau, Jim, and finds a new job. She is faced with the decision of whether to remain in her homeland or return to Brooklyn.

Declaration

film director

“As opposed to the head, the heart might be able to conceive of loving two people at the same time. Ellis’ choosing between two men also means choosing the kind of life she’d like to lead. But it’s hard for her to reconcile herself to the idea of ‘cauterizing’ a part of herself in order to choose. From an emotional point of view, it’s difficult, but she can’t help but look forward. In this love story there is a true strength that can be either destructive or liberating, depending on where it strikes.”
