CHOQUES

CHOQUES
by Sophia Al Maria
Country: Qatar
Year: 2014
Duration: 5'

“Choque” is the word stamped on the shields Brazilian riot police brandish. Culled from footage of São Paulo FIFA protests in 2014 and footage shot in Doha the night the Qatar 2022 bid was won. Choques is an exercise in context removal.

Declaration

film director

“The night FIFA announced the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts, I was in my home town of Doha, Qatar. I went out into the streets to shoot. There was jubilation. The future for us very suddenly – If only momentarily – changed. Class, gender and other divides seemed suspended those hours after the announcement. But all the while I was aware of the encroaching darkness.”
