Eva Nová is a sixty-two-year-old woman fighting to stay sober and living off the memories of her glory days as a famous actress during the communist era. She left her son Ďod’o with her sister Manka when he was just a boy; he is now a grown man who lives in the countryside with his wife, children, and ailing aunt. Eva goes to visit her son and his family and will do anything to make up for all the lost time.

Marko Škop
Marko Škop (Prešov, Slovakia, 1973) studied journalism at Comenius University in Bratislava in 1996. After going to film school at the Art Academy of Bratislava, he completed his doctorate in communication in 2005. He made his first feature documentary Other Worlds in 2006, winning the Audience Award and a Special Mention for Best Documentary at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which awarded him Best Documentary three years later for Osadné (2009). He participated at this year’s Toronto Film Festival with Eva Nová, winning the FIPRESCI Award.

“The size of the eyes, the shape of the hands or the timbre of the voice... We get them in the genes from our parents and we put them in our own children. We repeat our predecessors. And our children repeat us. From generation to generation, we also transfer mental connections, patterns of behaviour, a spiritual code. I am interested in the issue of family transfers, especially the topic of hereditary guilt. In good and in bad. I tried to get immersed in the intimacy of a family. I believe that, despite all the mistakes, we people still have the possibility to embrace, no matter how clumsy the hug may be. Because only love – without useless sentiment – is able to really redeem us.”
