The slaughterhouse in the Ruisseau district in Algiers is bustling with life: this is where the characters’ existences unfold, some are just in passing and some are regulars. This is where these men work, chat, follow unwritten rules that govern internal relations and external ones with the butchers to whom they sell the meat. In the place where animals’ lives come to an end, human life continues unabashed.

Hassen Ferhani
Hassen Ferhani (Algeri, Algeria, 1986) directed in 2006 his first short film, Les Baies d’Alger, selected in official competition in many international festivals. In 2008, he participated in La Fémis documentary workshop where he directed the short film Le vol du 140. He has been working as assistant director while working on his personal projects since 2009. He codirected the documentary Afric Hotel in 2010, which was screened at Visions du réel and FID Marseille. Fi Rassi Rond-Point (Roundabout in My Head) is his first feature film.

“While shooting, I give central importance to anchoring the crew in the landscape of the slaughterhouse. We will collectively apply ourselves to install a climate of trust and mutual respect. This context is vital and necessary if the truest and freest forms of speech are to emerge. This concern is central. My approach is not journalistic in nature. My relationship with the characters is not a hierarchical one. I do not conduct interviews. I open avenues for discussion, throw around phrases that will trigger reactions from the men I am filming. I favor group discussions without being involved in them. I also welcome their spontaneous impulses when they are facing the camera. I am making a film with them, not about them.”
