A professor of philology, after returning home from a lesson, is closely interrogated by his wife. The woman doesn’t agree with the pedagogical approach of his Academy of the Muses, which, thanks to its ties with classical culture, is supposed to regenerate the world through poetry. A controversial project, which provokes a series of situations dominated by words and desire.

José Luis Guerín (Barcellona, Spagna, 1960) lavora come cineasta indipendente, esplorando i confini tra finzione e documentario attraverso video sperimentali e installazioni proiettati in musei, gallerie ed esposizioni di tutto il mondo. Impegnato anche come insegnante di cinema e regia, ha girato alcuni film di grande importanza per il documentario contemporaneo, come Innisfree (1990) ed En construcción (2000), e nel 2007 e 2010 ha presentato alla Mostra di Venezia il film di finzione En la ciudad de Sylvia e il diario di viaggio Guest.

“To make En la ciudad de Sylvia, I started with an edition of Dante’s Vita nuova, marvelously translated by Raffaele Pinto. This is how we became acquainted. There wasn’t much dialogue in that film and the muse wasn’t a real character. Maybe in L’Accademia delle muse, which is based on words and in which the muses are flesh-and-blood women, the other side of the same concept can be seen. It’s something I still have to reflect on. […] But without a doubt, some of the concepts which circulated in the movie without words are now openly discussed by the characters of L’Accademia delle muse.”
