LA FRANCE EST NOTRE PATRIE

by Rithy Panh
Country: France
Year: 2014
Duration: 75'

A dreamlike meditation on the French colonization of Indochina, in which archive film clips dating back to the first part of the 20th century alternate with images of earlier films by Rithy Panh, interviews, sets, drawings, music and words. Neither an anti-colonial pamphlet nor an identitary revendication, but rather a reflection on time and memory. Or perhaps the story of a missed encounter between two cultures, two sensitivities and two imaginations, which had tragic and brutal consequences when it might have avoided wars, chaos and destruction.
