OIL CITY CONFIDENTIAL

OIL CITY CONFIDENTIAL
by Temple Julien
Country: UK
Year: 2009
Duration: 106'

Canvey Island is a small, isolated town in Essex that is dominated by an oil company. In 1971 four local young men formed a band called Dr Feelgood, in honor of Willie Perry’s song. With their spare, minimalist pub rock, they erupted on the musical scene, totally countercurrent to their contemporaries and their shows full of lights and special effects. Their burning energy exploded throughout Europe thanks to the fifty dates on their Speeding through Europe tour

Declaration

film director

“Oil City Confidential is the last film in a trilogy about British music culture of the Seventies. It acts as a prequel to the documentary on the Sex Pistols and the one on Joe Strummer. They all share the same cinematic language – an irreverent and anarchic punk style of montage, mixing archive and fictive footage, which I first used in The Great Rock & Roll Swindle. In all three films the music acts as a prism through which to examine the social and cultural conditions of the times.”
