RABO DE PEIXE

FISH TAIL
by Joaquim Pinto, Nuno Leonel
Country: Portugal
Year: 2015
Duration: 103'

On a global scale, industrial fishing practices are depleting the oceans. Rabo de Peixe, a small town in the Azores, always relied financially on traditional fishing, but they are going though hard times lately. Pedro, the young captain of the fishing boat, can’t seems to find a way out of the crisis, but every day he still faces the perils of the open sea. The film was shot in 1999-2001, following a year in the lives of Pedro and his crew, showing their determination to remain free and independent.

Declaration

film director

“We had the support of public television when we were shooting, and the collaboration of several fishing associations that wanted to keep alive the memory of traditional jobs that are going extinct. But our perspective wasn’t well received: they cut many scenes from the film and produced a fifty-five-minute version, which was only aired once on Portuguese television. Fourteen years later, industrial fishing practices have replaced traditional ones. The little fishing harbor of Rabo de Peixe has been destroyed and replaced by a massive structure to accommodate industrial fishing vessels, paid for by European funds.”
