The 66° 33’ parallel technically marks the threshold to the artic landscapes. As you pass the Artic Circle, the perennial summer light is juxtaposed to the infinite winter night. The search for a women intersects with an unusual environment where the sunlight is almost completely absent, causing a sort of undefined sense of time. A soft and enveloping cocoon. The different times and spaces experienced lead to a suspended place, a white desert immersed in darkness, between snowstorms and unusual travelers.

Alessia Zampieri
Alessia Zampieri (Dolo, Venice, Italy, 1988) moved to Milan in 2007, where she got an undergraduate degree in media design and a master’s degree in film and new media from the New Academy of Fine Arts (NABA). She made the short Porno Machine in 2013 during a workshop with the filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino. She then made SeeSTEAM (intro) and SeeSTEAM_Project between 2013 and 2014. She shot the footage for Rite of Passage during a trip to the Artic Circle; the film is her final graduate project, which she made with the director Marianna Schivardi as her thesis advisor.

“The idea for this short came from reading the book A Woman in the Polar Night, written by the Austrian painter Christiane Ritter in 1934, the year she spent by her husband’s side in a small cabin in the Svalbard Islands in Northern Norway. […] That’s why I wanted to go visit those lands by myself and experience the month in which the complete darkness gradually starts to yield to the sunlight’s return. I left with the bare necessities to film something in progress, and I discovered what that something would be once I arrived there: it was a place of researchers.”
