SERVITUDES - FILM 7

SERVITUDES - FILM 7
by Jesper Just
Country: Denmark
Year:
Duration: 9'

A young girl, an ideal figure and also a caricature of our desires as spectators. She is sitting in an office, by herself, eating corn. There are sensors on her hands registering continuous passive movements, which are both helping her and getting in her way. Her presence is on the brink of apathy and seduction, identity and product, individual and social constructs. But above all, it is indicative of the failure to find harmony.

Declaration

film director

“The Young Girl is not an individual but a construct: she lacks selfhood, discarding her individuality in order to replace it with a manufactured body and persona; she herself cannot create, she can only to be used for creation in an act of recreation; she cannot criticize a system whose existence inherently begets her existence. This tension is expressed in her actions: as she eats the corn, her hands are restrained. Even the corn itself relates back to the political system, a world of GMOs and capital gain. She too is modified, manipulated, a pawn in a power play that is both hidden and transparent.”
