After his grandfather dies, Ross Sutherland finds a VHS cassette which they used to watch together. The tape has clips from the movie Ghostbusters, the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Michael Jackson’s video clip Thriller, a reality show from the 1990s and various other things. Images of the past become the grainy background for a reflection on memories, death and the concept of repetition.

Ross Sutherland
Ross Sutherland (Edinburg, UK, 1979) is a member of the literary collective Aisle 16 and to date he has published four collections of poetry. He is the author of theatrical plays, including The Three Stigmata of Pacman and the interactive show Comedian Dies in the Middle of a Joke. In 2011, he directed the short Every Rendition on a Broken Machine and in 2015 he debuted in feature films with Stand By for Tape Back Up.

“Much of the inspiration for this film came from reading about the OuLiPo: a French writing movement that began back in the 1960s. The OuLiPo were interested in writing from the subconscious, but they took an opposite approach to the surrealists. Whilst the surrealists were trying to paint their dreams and remove rules from their art, the OuLiPo were doubling-down and trying to flood their work with as many rules as possible. They forced so many additional rules onto their work that they would lose control of the piece, and instead the words would start to flow from somewhere deeper inside themselves. The OuLiPo called themselves ‘rats trying to escape a maze of our own construction.’”
