A black miner is trapped for a few days underground. When he resurfaces he finds himself completely alone in a deserted New York: an atomic bomb has destroyed humanity. He organizes his life and searches for other survivors. The appearance of a blond girl and a white man renews racial tension. Based on the novel The Purple Cloud by Shiel, starring and produced by Harry Belafonte, a pamphlet against intolerance. The sequences in the deserted city are forceful.
