The artistic and existential arch of the Swedish actor Lou Castel. A life “trapped” between two characters directed by Marco Bellocchio: Alessandro in I pugni in tasca (1965) and Giovanni in Gli occhi, la bocca (1982). As he crosses Rome, suspended between post-industrial archeology and Pasolinian ruins, Castel unleashes a long stream of (sub)consciousness about his role as both actor and political activist, in a generous act of love toward what remains of his profession today. Pierpaolo De Sanctis
Pierpaolo De Sanctis (Rome, Italy) is a film scholar and documentary filmmaker, DJ and record producer. He has written many essays on Italian cinema of the 1960s and ’70s, published in collective books and journals, and coauthored two monographs dedicated to Matteo Garrone and Paolo Sorrentino, as well as the volume Pop Film Art. Visual culture, moda e design nel cinema italiano anni Sessanta e Settanta. In 2015, he founded the label Four Flies Records, specialized in producing vinyl recordings of Italian music written for film, radio and television during the 1960s and ’70s.

“A pugni chiusi is the outcome of a courtship I started in 2008. A relationship made of phone calls, trips, e-mail correspondence, proposals, failed attempts, new solutions, great refusals (Lou Castel’s) and stubborn insistence (mine). Until we became accomplices, experimenting a new approach to the film I had in mind: a method of ‘direct creation,’ which transformed the depth of the acting from a ‘historical narration of the past’ into a ‘dramatic narration of the present.’ An unpredictable language for both of us, catalyzed by the urgency of being here and now.”
