Ahti Ikonen is a captain at the highpoint of his career. He is entering the port of Savanna at the helm of the Brugge, a 35,000-ton container ship. But the need to load the gigantic ship in a hurry causes a mortal accident. The journey continues but the equilibrium onboard is compromised and Ahti is forced to come to terms with his feelings of guilt. The situation explodes when the Brugge arrives in Rotterdam and the unionized dock workers refuse to unload the ship, using the accident as a pretext in their struggle. [mp]

Axel Koenzen
Axel Koenzen studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and worked as a freelance photographer and visual researcher for companies such as R.S.A. and Columbia Tristar Los Angeles. He studied at the German Film and Television School Berlin (DFFB), where he directed several short films including Waxandwane and Firn, premiered at the Cinéfondation in Cannes.

“My uncle was a captain and later a pilot in Hamburg. I often went on board with him. As a child, I thought: this is the freest person I know; he sails around the whole world. In the course of researching for the film, it turned out that this freedom on board is not what it’s cracked up to be. The sea is a realm of illusion. In reality, endlessness seems threatening. […] It was clear to me from the start that I wanted to shoot on a real ship and that that would be the only way to convey what it feels like on board.”
