DIE GETRÄUMTEN

THE DREAMED ONES
by Ruth Beckermann
Country: Austria
Year: 2016
Duration: 89'

Anja and Laurence are two young actors who find themselves side by side in a recording studio as they read out loud the correspondence between the poets Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, who met in Vienna after the end of WWII. The poets came from completely different milieus: she grew up in a Nazi family while he was the son of Jews who died in the Shoah. The dramatic correspondence becomes a vehicle for a love story with tension and contrasts even between the actors, in an unexpected and gripping exchange between reality and fiction, past and present. Declaration

film director

“This film certainly does explore new territory. In The Dreamed Ones I not only worked with actors for the first time but also adopted a completely different approach; at the beginning I didn‘t know precisely how far I would move away from the essay film. The idea of using a literary text as the basis developed from a meeting with the literary critic Ina Hartwig, and over the course of a year I developed the screenplay for the film together with her.”
