DIE REISE MIT VATER

THAT TRIP WE TOOK WITH DAD
by Anca Miruna Lăzărescu
Country: Germany, Romania, Hungary, Sweden
Year: 2016
Duration: 111'

Arad, Romania, 1968. In the Romanian-German Reinholtz family, everybody has their own problems: the father, who is almost completely blind, is depressed and has already tried to take his life; eighteen-year-old Emil plays at being a rebel and composes “inconvenient” songs on his guitar. After the mother’s death, it’s all on the shoulders of the eldest son Mihai who, at the end of his tether, decides to take his father to the German Democratic Republic to undergo an operation which will give him back his sight and, perhaps, his serenity. With this objective, the three set off: but their encounter with the Prague Spring will change their plans. [rm]

Declaration

film director

“Like the Russian tanks that ran over Prague in 1968, the characters in the film are run over by a random incident with the power to change the course of their entire lives. Even though this is a historical plot, the main theme is very contemporary. That Trip we Took with Dad asks a simple question: how free are we really to choose freedom?”
