Gana lives in a remote city in Bulgaria, where she works as a nurse giving home care to patients. She takes advantage of this situation and sells her patients’ ID cards on the black market. At home, she takes care of her unemployed mother, with whom she barely speaks, and has a tired relationship with a car mechanic, with whom she shares a morphine addiction. Nothing seems to shake the woman’s conscience, until a feeling of empathy, which until then she had never experienced, brings her close to the elderly man Yoan, who she takes care of and who she has already swindled. Ralitza Petrova
Ralitza Petrova lives and works in France, the UK and Bulgaria. She studied at England’s National Film and Television School, where she first studied fine arts and then directing. She debuted in 2007 with the short Rotten Apple, which won the Prix UIP Berlin at the Berlin Film Festival. A director and screenwriter, Petrova next directed Above Us Only Sky (2008) and By the Grace of God (2009), with which she participated at the Cannes Film Festival. Godless (2016), her first feature film, won the Golden Leopard at this year’s Locarno Film Festival, as well as the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, the Boccalino Award and Best Actress.

“The film was designed to carry the rawness and authenticity of real life. Most of the cast are non-actors, whose life is close to that of the characters. The fictional narrative of the nurse was fused with the reality of looking after actual patients. This was a way to explore both the deluded mentality of the past generation, and the skewed values of the present one.”
