In this movie Elisabetta Sgarbi gathers the cycle of frescos that Romanino realized between 1532 and 1541, in Pisogne, Breno and Bienno, in val Camonica, Italy. That exchange between life and form that Romanino’s frescos emanate in the three churches is taken seriously. Coming back between the houses and the people of those villages, that Romanino too must have observed for long, and, in the end, portrayed, they are put at work again and managed as painting, to give new life to Romanino’s already wild painting.

Elisabetta Sgarbi
(Ferrara, Italy) is the creator and director of the publishing house La nave di Teseo. She created and for nineteen years has been the artistic director of the festival La Milanesiana, dedicated to literature, music, cinema, science, art, philosophy, and theatre. Since 1999 she has been the director and producer of her films, which were often presented at the Torino Film Festival.

“This is a continuous movie, that I’ve been following for years. Or rather, that has been following me for years, even before knowing valle Camonica, even before knowing Romanino: since my uncle Bruno, my mother Rina, and my brother Vittorio then, used to climb up there, forerunning me.
