film director

Mohamed "Hamè" Bourokba

Mohamed “Hamé” Bourokba and Ekoué Labitey met at university in 1994. Three years later, they started the rap group La Rumeur. They became the voice of the plight of the banlieue and of the children of France’s post-colonial immigration history. In just a few years they gained respect and recognition as one of the most important components of the French hip hop scene. Their first LP, L’ombre sur la mésure, was released in 2002 and quickly became a genre classic. “Hamé” Bourokba moved to New York in 2004, where he studied cinema at the Tisch School of Arts. After his return, he directed the short Ce chemin devant moi (2012), presented at the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. He then made his debut feature Les derniers parisiens in 2015, which wrote and directed with Ekoué.

Declaration

film director

“Les derniers parisiens is first and foremost a film made by a rap group that, for years, has been feeding itself off various influences through hip-hop. […] Our aim is to bring rap culture to the screen the way we experience it on tour. […] We wanted the film to relay the urgency and insecurities that seize our characters. Our ambition was to direct a fiction film that is grounded in the reality of its stories, its main location, of these two generations still infused with risks and tensions. Shaping and writing this film was a long thought-out process but it also bears the hazards encountered in its making. Les derniers parisiens was shot fast with this dynamic that characterizes our artistic identity.”
