Indonesia, 1927, toward the end of the Dutch colonial era. A young and beautiful woman lives with her old and ailing Dutch husband. She lost her own name and now goes by Nyai, which means ‘concubine of a foreigner.’ She realizes she lives in a sort of prison: she has to look after all the visitors who have come to celebrate her husband’s birthday and discuss how to manage his lands. Nyai is strong, proud, and capable of handling her consort’s estate, but both the locals and his family want to seize her husband’s wealth and privileges. [cg]

Biography

film director

Garin Nugroho

Garin Nugroho (Jakarta, Indonesia, 1961) graduated from the Film Academy in Jakarta in 1985, the same year of his directorial debut with the documentary Hand Clapping, which won Indonesia’s Film Festival, as did his subsequent feature Land of Challenges (1986). In 1998, Leaf on a Pillow received the Special Jury Prize from the Tokyo Film Festival and an award from the Certain regard section in Cannes. In 2000, he released his documentary A Poet, a reflection on the mass repression perpetrated by the Indonesian government in the 1960s, which then won the Silver Leopard in Locarno. He participated to the Berlinale with Bird-Man Tale in 2004, and to Rotterdam in 2005 with Of Love and Eggs. He achieved his international consecration in 2006, winning Best Film at the Venice Film Festival with his film-opera Requiem from Java.

Declaration

film director

“This is the first film accompanied by an entirely gamelan soundtrack. The soundtrack of the film reflects how the medley of art, music and dance can work together to create something incredibly valuable like it does in Java. We live in an oral tradition, and if you come to Java you can see how song, dance and art all live together.”
