POLAARPOISS

THE POLAR BOY
by Anu Aun
Country: Estonia
Year: 2016
Duration: 97'

Mattias has a dream and it’s about to come true: to become a student of photography at the Berlin Arts Academy. But when he meets Hanna, his plans are disrupted. To show his beloved girlfriend that he is an adventuresome and unpredictable type, Mattias begins to behave recklessly, and often breaks the law. What he doesn’t know yet, though, is that his girlfriend is bipolar. But he’s about to find out. And when, in a moment of jealousy, he commits a crime that could put him behind bars, Mattias decides to pretend he’s bipolar, too, to avoid a prison sentence. [rm]

Declaration

“This film speaks about bipolarity as a disease of modern society, where people constantly seem to feel the need to pretend to be someone else ¬– someone better according to some twisted scale of values – and about the fears and dangers of failing to stand up to their own expectations.”
