SMRT U SARAJEVU

DEATH IN SARAJEVO
by Danis Tanovic
Country: France, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Year: 2016
Duration: 85'

One hundred years have passed since Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, creating the pretext for the First World War. A century later, European diplomats congregate in the same city to celebrate peace and dialogue among nations. But for a while now, the employees of the hotel where the summit is held have been upset about their wage situation. And the strike they call on the day of the ceremony, along with the problems of contemporary society and the repercussions of the conflict in former Yugoslavia, raise questions about a controversial past which is still under discussion. [rm]

Danis Tanović

Danis Tanović (Zenica, Yugoslavia, 1969) graduated in music before beginning to study at the Sarajevo Film Academy. His studies were interrupted, however, by the outbreak of the Bosnian War. He accompanied the Bosnian army with his camera during the war and then moved to Brussels to resume his film studies. His feature debut No Man’s Land received over forty international awards; among them, it won a prize at Cannes in 2001 and was also awarded an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker screened in competition at the Berlinale in 2013 and won two Silver Bears.

Declaration

film director

“I was inspired to make an entire film around the play Hotel Europe, encompassing its spirit and expanding its ideas. The French VIP speaker’s dialogue is directly from Lévy’s original play. We see him arrive at the hotel, rehearsing in his room, and then at the end of the film we see actual footage from the Sarajevo premiere. Everything else that happens outside of his hotel room is my construction. It’s a Bosnian, a contemporary perspective on the bloodiest century in our history.”
