Mehdi Hmili
Mehdi Hmili (Tunis, Tunisia) studied film at the Paris Film School. He debuted as a director and screenwriter in 2009 with the short X-Moment, which was followed by Li-La (2011) and The Night of Badr (2012), both of which deal with exile and love. Thala mon amour (2016) is his first feature-length film. A well-known poet at home for his tirades against the Ben Ali regime, he lives and works in Paris and Tunis.

“This film is a chiaroscuro film; the characters who seem to have lost everything, irresistibly look for reasons to live despite the destruction at work. They keep looking for reasons to live and love again, in spite of everything. I tried to combine the hyper-realistic aesthetics of certain scenes with dream sequences. The transition from outside sets, often by night, to others happening under the light of a murderous sun tries to bring up an analogy with the ambivalence with which all powers are confronted. This is obvious through the texture, the grain, the color saturation and the sharpness of the back grounds that primarily reflects the psychology of the characters.”
