THE CHALLENGE

THE CHALLENGE
by Yuri Ancarani
Country: France, Italy
Year: 2016
Duration: 70'

A falconer accompanies his competition falcons to an important tournament in Qatar. Instant cities have made the desert a very different place from what it was in the past. A place of silence and dilated time, zenith sunlight and hot winds that seem to suck every trace of water from your body, it has had to accept the vertical silhouettes of skyscrapers where the view used to stretch to the horizon. Nonetheless, falconry, with over forty centuries of history, still resists, allowing those who practice it to maintain a close and authentic relationship with the desert. [mp]

Declaration

film director

“The Challenge is a complex movie, even though it’s fluid and tranquil. It’s easy to get to the desert; you take an airplane, you get a guide, you tour around for two or three hours, you ride a camel, and then you return to the city. It’s almost impossible to stop and look carefully. I realized that life in these new metropolises like Dubai or Doha is for everyone but not for the Bedouins, who continue to love their desert and need to experience it in full and intensely. It’s a question of tradition.”
