ANIMAL CINEMA

ANIMAL MOVIE
by Emilio Vavarella
Country: USA, Italy
Year: 2017
Duration: 12'

A gallery of fragments of YouTube videos shot by animals who found themselves in front of a camera and took matters in their own hands. Movements of bodies, pincers, tentacles, claws, and fangs replace any directorial premeditation. The resulting piece is a vortex of forms of consciousness and passions that opens an unprecedented insight on the complicated assembly of humans, animals, and technologies to which we all belong.

Biography

film director

Emilio Vavarella

Emilio Vavarella studied at the University of Bologna and at IUAV, the architecture school in Venice. He is currently completing a doctoral program in film and audiovisual studies at Harvard University. As a visual artist, he is particularly interested in the theoretic aspects of image production. His projects try to imagine the future developments of new technologies by using them unconventionally, in counter-productive, poetic, and dysfunctional ways, through de-contextualization, speculative fiction, and the improper use of tools and supports.

FILMOGRAFIA

Animal Cinema (cm, 2017).

Declaration

film director

“Animal Cinema is my first film. It stems from my art practice and it expands my investigation of non-anthropocentric audio-visual experiences. I believe that a new regime of moving images is emerging in the tension between ideas of sensorial contact, encounter, and closeness, and the presence of the unthought, the unsummonable, the inexplicable and the undecidable.”
