I USED TO SLEEP ON THE ROOFTOP

I USED TO SLEEP ON THE ROOFTOP
by Angie Obeid
Country: Lebanon, Qatar
Year: 2017
Duration: 61'

Until 2015, Nuhad, a fifty-three-year-old Syrian woman, had never left her country, much less had she ever thought about emigrating. But when civil war breaks out she realizes the moment has come to leave a place that no longer belongs to her. She finds her way to Angie, who is twenty-seven-year-old a friend of her son, and who lives in an apartment in nearby Beirut. It is the only refuge possible for Nuhad and, over time, it becomes an antechamber which sees the birth, development and death of indefinite projects for the future. Her plans are blocked by the fragmentary information she tracks down on the web or receives from people who live elsewhere. A form of symbiosis is created between two very different women, yet united by the need and desire to find their own place in the world.

Declaration

film director

“A double reality in one space and time: being physically present in a place, yet fantasizing about another one. This is a reaction to war, the consequence of living in chaotic and unforgiving times. This experience brings two women together, forming a common ground between two generations, two waitings; between Nuhad and I.”
