Los Angeles, 1992. Millie is an African-American single mother of eight adopted children who lives in the South Central neighborhood. She feels attracted to her white neighbor Obie, even though he is an oddball and a drunk. After the police officers accused of beating Rodney King were acquitted despite the crushing videos submitted into evidence, riots broke out among the African-American and Latino communities, raging through the city for three days. Millie has to navigate through the tensions after three of her children get lost in the chaos and devastation.

Deniz Gamze Erguven
Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Ankara, Turkey, 1978) moved to France when she was very young and studied at La Fémis in Paris, where she graduated in 2008. She directed her first short Mon trajet préféré in 2006, followed by Bir damla su - A Drop of Water (2006), which screened at the Cinéfondation in Cannes and was in competition at the Locarno Film Festival. She then directed her first feature Mustang (2015), which takes place in Turkey; the movie participated at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes Festival, it was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA Film Award, and received several awards like the Label Europa Cinemas in Cannes, four César Awards, the prize for Directors to Watch from the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Audience Award from the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

“When I arrived in South Central in August 2006, every step confirmed the intuition of making a film about the L.A. riots. The way I can best explain it is: you are an archaeologist trying to dig out something and you suddenly see a piece of the Sphinx. You know it’s there, and you know it’s huge, but you only see a little parcel of it. I always felt with Kings that it existed before I started working on it, and then I just found it.”
